Greetings friends. Today I am looking at a healing food that is yet another amazing export from the Amazon region of South America. I first came across Camu Camu a while ago when researching healing foods for inflammation reduction. This is one awesome food you need to know about and include in your arsenal of healing foods for everyday well being. Although the scientific name is technically Myrciaria dubia, most of the world knows this awesome fruit as camu camu, or perhaps cacari, depending on where in the world you happen to be right now. This tree that grows on riverbanks is most commonly found in South America, in Peru and Brazil, and its fruit is a small, cherry-like drupe. These fruits weren’t known to the rest of the world until relatively recently, and the country that imports it the most is actually Japan, but as more and more is discovered about its remarkable nutritional composition, the demand is increasing throughout the world. While the fruit is relatively easy to harvest, there is still not large-scale cultivation outside of South America, making it a very important crop. Camu Camu is primarily regarded for it’s very high concentration of Vitamin C. Interestingly enough, the amount of vitamin C content (about 2-3% of the total volume) begins to diminish as the fruit reaches maturity, which is when the top flavors emerge. Therefore, those harvesting have to forge a delicate balance between flavor and nutritional benefit, which is why some people prefer slightly less ripened camu camu fruit. In terms of uses, camu camu lacks an overwhelming flavour, so it is commonly used in ice creams or sweets, but little else. The dried powder of camu camu has also been sold as a dietary supplement, given its rich nutrient content, including some antioxidants and essential amino acids for human health. The Health Benefits of Camu Camu


Being such a new food to most this is valuable information but please keep in mind that more research is always being done so further benefits may become known as time goes on. The main known health benefits of Camu Camu at this time are:

  • Vitamin C – Camu camu is chock full of vitamin C: 60 times more per serving than an orange! A teaspoon of camu camu powder has 1180 per cent of your recommended daily intake for vitamin C, which is important for gum health, among other functions in our body.
  • Valine – Valine is an amino acid found in camu camu. It’s an essential amino acid, meaning that we must get it in food because our bodies can’t produce it. Valine is used by the body to prevent muscle breakdown and is important for nervous system and cognitive function.
  • Potassium – Our bodies need potassium for the proper functioning of the heart and kidneys. Camu camu is one way to get it: 71.1 milligrams are found in every 100 grams.
  • Leucine – This is another essential amino acid found in camu camu, one that our bodies need for muscle and bone tissue growth and recovery and the production of growth hormones.
  • Serine – Another amino acid! This one is key for digestion: serine helps to break down the bonds in proteins and polypeptides so they can be used by our bodies.
  • Flavonoids – Camu camu has several different flavonoids, which are compounds that are found in plants and are part of what gives fruits and vegetables their awesome colours. They mostly function in the body as antioxidants, neutralizing harmful free radicals.
  • Gallic Acid – Gallic acid is found in camu camu, which is good news because it appears to have anti-fungal and anti-viral properties. It also acts as an antioxidant.
  • Ellagic Acid – This is another acid with antioxidant properties, found in camu camu. It’s been studied for anti-cancer effects, though research is still very early. Some research also indicates that ellagic acid has anti-diabetes effects.
  • Inflammation – In one study, 20 male smokers drank camu camu juice or took vitamin C tablets daily for a week. The group who took camu camu showed a decrease in some markers for antioxidants and oxidative stress at the end of the study, compared to no change for those who had vitamin C tablets.

This is a safe and very useful healing food for anyone to use for daily well being or in particular, if you are someone who suffers from inflammation related condition/s. The only known caution at this time is for those currently taking chemotherapy, other than that, it is good to go!
