Healing Smoothies - Detoxification
Detoxification is one area I am asked about often by many clients. Whilst it is well known I am not a fan of “Detox Programs” and fads, detoxification is very important in maintaining optimum health and well being and I personally view detoxification as something we should all work at gradually on a daily basis by supporting our body’s natural systems of elimination and detoxification. Today I am focusing on detoxification briefly and listing my favourite foods to use in blended extracted whole food smoothies that are great in supporting and assisting with daily detoxification. Our bodies take in a huge amount of toxins each day. From vehicle exhaust emissions to alcohol, cigarette smoke to processed and junk foods, substances containing free radicals and other destructive compound constantly enter our system and can wreak havoc on our health both in the short term and long term. Our bodies have been designed well to seek out, contain and eliminate these toxins and fortunately there are many and plentiful amounts of foods and natural remedies known to both repair damaged cells and eliminate toxic particles from the body. The latter in known as Detoxification and primarily involve the Liver and the Kidneys although other organs play secondary roles. If we do our best to support our bodies ability to detoxify itself each day, we reduce the risk of collecting toxic build up in our bodies which can cause permanent and long lasting damage.


The Liver

Our liver filters the blood and collects dead cells, damaging chemicals and harmful microorganisms. It then uses specific enzymes to kill, break down and/or neutralize these substances so they can be safely reabsorbed by the blood stream and transported to the kidneys. The liver also serves important digestive functions as we have already spoken about when addressing the digestive system.


The Kidneys

Our kidneys are often described as the blood cleaners. Our kidneys receive filtered blood from the liver and filter it again, reabsorbing vital nutrients and water back into the blood stream and eliminating any excess compound through theΒ  urine which flows through the Ureters collects in the Bladder and is expelled from the body through the Urethra.


Foods and Ingredients for Detoxification Smoothies


Eliminating toxins taken from the environment is key to maintaining a healthy body. Drink antioxidant rich foods in your extracted blended food smoothies and supercharge your health by protecting your liver and kidneys from free radicals.

  • Beets and Beet Greens – Known for their ability to cleanse, beets are loaded with antioxidants that help detoxify the liver and kidneys. Extract them raw to maximize their benefits. Nutrients extracted from beets are readily absorbed into the body and may cause nausea if consumed too quickly. Mix with other vegetables like carrot or cabbage. If you must drink extracted beets alone, do not consume more than 110gms at a time and dilute with at least 60-100ml of water
  • Celery – Loaded with antioxidants and celebrated for it’s diuretic properties, celery is an excellent detoxifying ingredient. Celery is especially beneficial to the kidneys as it lowers uric acid levels in the blood, thus reducing an individuals risk of developing kidney stones. It makes a delicious and refreshing beverage when extracted with apple and lemon.
  • Artichokes – As with celery, artichokes lower uric acid levels in the blood. They also contain compounds that assist in the production and elimination of bile; the fluid discharge of toxins that the liver produces. This helps insure that toxins are efficiently condensed and removed from the body.
  • Apples – Research suggests that the antioxidants found in the humble apple may prevent the growth of cancer cells in the liver and bowel.
  • Greens: Spinach Alfalfa Spirulina, Chlorella, Arugula Wheat Grass – Full of chlorophyll, these greens help the liver rid the body of harmful dietary and environmental toxins, especially pesticides, heavy metals, smog and herbicides.
  • Garlic – This awesome little pungent herb bulb helps support the liver by producing enzymes that filter toxins from the digestive tract. Enjoy raw or cooked.
  • Asparagus, Broccoli, Cauliflower, Carrots, Turmeric, Oregano – These all contain optimal levels of Sulphur and Glutathione. These foods help with the detoxification process, especially when consumed raw.
  • Citrus Fruits – These are rich in Vitamin C. These foods transform harmful toxins into digestible material. They also support the liver cleansing process.
  • Green Tea – Green tea is loaded with many antioxidants including Catechins; this is a chemical compound renowned for their detoxifying properties.

Healing Smoothie Recepies To Aid Detoxification

Flamin’ Tamer

  1. 50% beet Greens
  2. 2 Stalks of Celery
  3. 1 lemon, peeled.
  4. 1 Pinch of Cayenne Pepper
  5. Top off to your blending devices fill line with coconut water and/or straight water.


  1. 50% Spinach
  2. 1 Cup Steamed Artichoke hearts
  3. 1 Clove of Garlic
  4. 1 Pinch of turmeric
  5. Juice of 1/2 Lemon
  6. Top off to your blending devices fill line with coconut water and/or straight water.


  1. 3 Stalks of Celery
  2. Juice from 1 Lemon
  3. 1 Cored Apple
  4. Top off to your blending devices fill line with coconut water and/or straight water.

Going Green

  1. 25% Spinach
  2. 25% Aragula
  3. 2 Stalks of Celery
  4. Juice of 1 Lemon
  5. 1 Tsp of Chlorella or Spirulina Powder
  6. 1 Cup Chilled Green tea
  7. Top off to your blending devices fill line with coconut water and/or straight water.

Beet It

  1. 50% Spinach
  2. 1 Beet cut into cubes.
  3. 1 Cored Apple
  4. 1 Lemon, peeled.
  5. Top off to your blending devices fill line with coconut water and/or straight water.

Green Zinger

  1. 50% Kale
  2. 1 Apple, cored.
  3. 1 Lemon, peeled.
  4. 1 slice of Ginger (Approx 5-10cm or 1 Tsp of Crushed Ginger)
  5. Top off to your blending devices fill line with coconut water and/or straight water.

Vego Bliss

  1. 50% Spinach
  2. 1/4 head of Broccoli
  3. 3 Spear of Asparagus
  4. 1 cored Apple cut into chunks.
  5. Top off to your blending devices fill line with coconut water and/or straight water.

Tea Time Detox

  1. 50% Aragula
  2. 1 Handful of Alfalfa or Wheat Grass (Or both)
  3. 1 Orange, peeled
  4. 1 Lemon, peeled.
  5. 1 Cup of Chilled Green Tea
  6. Top off to your blending devices fill line with coconut water and/or straight water.

Of course as with all of the healing smoothie recepies I offer up, you can mix and match and play around with the recepies to create your own so I encourage you to do so and see what you can come up with. Remember, detoxification is taking place everyday so in order to best assist, simply aid in your body’s natural process rather than trying to “shock” it in a commercially sold “Detox Program”.
